I am Lorena Bruner. And I am delighted to announce that I am running for the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue for Stafford County, Virginia. I originally came to Stafford, Virginia over 20 years ago, married and a military spouse with young children. It was 1996 and Stafford County looked very different than it does now. With energies focused on taxpayer support with providing additional services, we can work together towards building a talented, hardworking team focused on serving you.
Background
My father served as a soldier in Marine Corps for several years, and retired a Veteran. With an honorary discharge, my father met and married my mother, and started a family in Northern California. He became a Church Pastor and served for over four decades. Northern California, is also where I met and married a ROTC student who became an Air Force Officer . As we traveled the world, our family grew and we settled within the Stafford, Virginia community.
After living here for more than two decades, I served as a Military Officer Spouse for over twenty years. Our children have attended and graduated with honors from Stafford Public Schools. Two as junior high school Congressional Pages. Among five children, they have served and completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in Engineering. Graduating from Purdue University, Johns Hopkins and University of Southern California. Three of five younger children, are graduates of University of Virginia, with one graduate degree from Emory University. Another served as a Peace Corps Volunteer, another serves as Stanford Medical Center BSRN, and another recently Awarded the 2022 Pay Pal Maggie Lena Walker Award…. All five children accepted into 4 year universities in Virginia and out of Virginia . And raised by a mother who also has had pursuits in the many fields of service which include those listed below:
My career background involves working with Quantico Marine Base Retail Exchange, as a Business Entrepreneur, Managing Counselor for University Admissions, Legal Assistant in Military Family Law, Vice President of Virginia Public Policy/Board Member for AAUW National Non-Profit, Advocate of The League of Women Voters and Stafford County Public School Teacher. In addition to raising a family and pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in Business Administration w/Minor in HR Mgmt. from Strayer University. Also receipt of Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Development from Johns Hopkins University. And presently a candidate in dual degree program MBA and MA in Government with Johns Hopkins University. My family and I have only just begun to practice many years of service for our community and country.

Responsibilities
The Commissioner of Revenue is a state constitutional officer as set forth in the Constitution of Virginia. The officer is elected to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth by establishing the value of the property for ad valorem tax proposed within Stafford County and applying tax rates established by the Stafford County Board of Supervisors. The Commissioner is elected to serve a four-year term.
The Commissioner of Revenue is also responsible for assessing, validating, and certifying taxes, representing over 80% of the funds budgeted to pay for public services like education, public safety, libraries, parks, and social services.
